Corvias Foundation Prepares Scholarship Recipients in Virtual New-Scholar Orientation

East Greenwich, RI (July 16, 2020) - Corvias Foundation, a private foundation founded by Corvias CEO John Picerne to support education opportunities for military families, kicked off the 13th annual orientation on July 14 for its incoming class of scholarship recipients. Through workshops and speaker presentations, students learn valuable information to help them transition into the routine of higher education and life at college. The event is one way the foundation provides beyond-the-dollar support for its scholars.

While past orientations held by Corvias Foundation have taken place in-person through a week-long program in Boston, the current health crisis has made such an event impossible. To continue to provide the scholars with the best support possible, the organization transitioned to a virtual the orientation through a series of sessions that will take place over the course of four days.

“Rather than cancel this signature event, we decided it was imperative to reconstruct the format and transition it to a virtual space,” said Maria Montalvo, executive director at Corvias Foundation. “The topics of this year’s sessions include academic success strategies, health and nutrition, financial knowledge, and more. We know this orientation does a wonderful job preparing our scholars to be prepared for their academic and professional journeys. We are excited to continue to provide them with these unique and valuable resources.”

The orientation includes presentations from Nancy Hunter-Denney, professional speaker and leadership trainer, and Chelsea Williams, founder and CEO of College Code. Hunter-Denney will also provide the parents of the scholars with educational resources to prepare them for their child’s transition to college.

In the first orientation module, current Corvias Foundation scholars and alumni participated in a Q&A session that provided advice to and addressed concerns from the new scholars.

“Don’t force yourself to study something just because you said you were going to,” said 2020 graduate and Corvias Foundation alumna, Fiona Pedrick, during the Q&A. “Be open to change and finding something you really love to study, like I did.”

Since 2006, Corvias Foundation has awarded nearly $14 million to military children, spouses, and children of Corvias employees across 13 Army and Air Force installations.
