Fort Bragg, N.C. (May 17, 2021) – Service members at Fort Bragg who are transitioning into the civilian workplace have a unique opportunity to become trained maintenance technicians at no cost to them. Corvias Property Management (Corvias), which manages over 6,100 homes on Fort Bragg, sees the value from this program offered by the Home Builder Institute (HBI) and the Home Depot Foundation and recently hired three graduates.
“The HBI program gives us the opportunity to employ veterans who also understand our residents and can help us provide them with the highest levels of customer service,” said Heather Fuller, operations director at Corvias. “We are proud to have three of their graduates wear the Corvias uniform.”
While stationed at Fort Bragg for three years, Steven Mobley decided to join the HBI program to learn carpentry and electrical skills, knowing he would have a job with Corvias upon graduation. “Whether you’ve had experience in this kind of work,” says Steve, “I highly recommend this program.”
Combat engineer Trelon Carter was stationed at Fort Bragg from 2012 - 2016. Unsure of what he would do once he was out, Trelon knew he needed to make a plan. The program offered instruction in problem-solving, basic carpentry, and electrical training. This level of training appealed to him, along with knowing he would have a job once he graduated. When asked what advice he has for others considering the program, Trelon said, “Definitely take it.”
After serving 20 years in aviation and military intelligence, with the last eight of those years at Fort Bragg, Aaron Creasman was excited and relieved to learn about the HBI program. He wasn’t sure what retirement would look like, but he liked the idea of obtaining training in carpentry and electrical. While he had some knowledge in these areas, the training allowed him to sharpen his expertise. Aaron encourages anyone considering the program to take advantage of it.
Committed to supporting veterans, The Home Depot Foundation and Home Builder Institute (HBI) created this 12-week course to train veterans in a certification program that allows them to step into a paid position upon graduation. “Our students have worked hard to get where they are, and HBI is very proud of them,” said Torri Boderick, operations manager for Military Services at HBI.
